New York Knicks: Jalen Brunson Faces Off Against Former Coach as Playoffs Get Intense
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most intriguing matches in the second round of the 2024 playoffs is the New York Knicks-Indiana Pacers matchup. Both teams took down perennial playoff contenders to show how the hegemony in the Eastern Conference has changed.

Fans are having difficulty figuring out which of the two squads will make the playoffs until the first game has been actually played. They both have exciting rosters with outstanding superstars and a solid supporting cast that can contain them whenever they want.

However, the series’ unpredictability isn’t the only attractive thing about it. The fact that two of the central figures in this battle used to work together poses an interesting dynamic that will have an impact throughout the series.

New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson shares honest thoughts about facing former coach in Eastern Conference Semis

Jalen Brunson and Rick Carlisle are familiar with how the other approaches the game since they worked together in the Dallas Mavericks. They were both there during the early years of Luka Doncic’s rise into an NBA superstar.

While many are wondering if their previous relationship would impact how the series would play out, Brunson assured New York Knicks fans that it will be more of the same from him, as reported on a Field Level Media piece:

“In all honesty, I said this last time, you’re in the playoffs now, there is no extra motivation,” Brunson told reporters when asked about his unhappiness at the time. “It is what it is. The past is the past. Rick welcomed me into the league and helped me become the player (I am today) and helped me grow from Day 1.”

It’s an encouraging thing for Knicks fans to see their star player not letting previous relationships affect his upcoming performance against the Pacers.

He’s been a phenomenal player for New York in this year’s playoffs, averaging 35.5 points on a respectable 42.9% efficiency. He’s also grabbing 4.5 boards and 9.0 assists as he led the team past the 76ers in the first round.

Fans can expect the same level of productivity from him in this series as he’s determined to lead the team to their first NBA Finals since the 90s.
